History

The Institute for Occupational Safety was established on January 27, 1960, as the first institution of its kind in the former Yugoslavia. It is the date that has entered the history of the Institute for the Quality of Working and Living Environment 1. Maj in Nis, and is celebrated as the day of the company. It was founded to support the economy in order to reduce injuries at work and occupational diseases caused by the expansion of economic development with facilities of outdated technology, science and poorly qualified structure of workers. It was the beginning of the institutional establishment of the area of occupational safety in the former SFRY and the beginning of the adoption of laws and bylaws (regulations, standards, instructions, etc.) in this area. The name in today's form and meaning – the Institute for the Quality of Working and Living Environment 1. Maj – the organization received in 1995. Since 1960, the institute has been active in the fields of safety and health at work, fire protection, and environmental protection.The leading position in the market has been gained by providing a wide range of services, technical equipment, expertise and experience, all in order to meet customer requirements. In order to improve the work and the quality of services, the Institute has formed as a separate legal entity THE INSTITUTE 1.MAJ–CENTER FOR EQUIPMENT NIŠ that provides services in the following fields:

–inspection and testing of work equipment (machines, cranes, internal transport vehicles…) according to the Law on Safety and Health at Work and the Rules and Regulations on the Procedure for Inspection and Testing of Work Equipment and Work Environment Conditions,

–inspection and testing of electrical and lightning protection installations,

–inspection and testing of transformer stations,

– design and preparation of technical documentation.

Since 2008, as a special organizational part, the Laboratory for Testing of Building Materials which provides testing services for asphalt, concrete and geomechanical testing has become a part of the Institute. The laboratory is accredited by the Accreditation Body of Serbia (ATS).

In August 2014, the Institute was organized as a Limited Liability Company.
